What is one to think when a 12-year-old chooses Habakkuk 3:17-19 as their life verse?

Though the fig tree should not blossom,

nor fruit be one vines,

the produce of the olive fail

and the fields yield no food,

the flock be cut off from the fold

and there be no herd in the stalls,

yet I will rejoice in the Lord;

I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

God, the Lord, is my strength;

He makes my feet like the deer's;

He makes me tread on my high places.

I remember when Becky Frame shared this story about her son Jared. I knew that it needed to be in the film.

Becky said, "When Jared was in sixth grade, when he had his major heart diagnosis, Jared got a whiteboard marker and climbed up on his bathroom counter, because he had a mirror that goes to the ceiling, and he wrote that entire verse up there." Becky continued, “I do remember being somewhat taken aback, like, you did that?!....For a parent to see your child trust in the Lord as much as his little 12-year-old heart could. He had been through so much."

I later asked Pastor Jamie Rasmussen his thoughts on that passage and what Jared did. He shares in the film "The great challenge of Habakkuk, what he is saying to his nation at the time is whether things go well for us or not, whether things get better, whether we have to suffer or not. God is still God, and God is still good. There’s a blessing in finding our joy in Him. Whether or not our culture, our nation, or even our personal lives are going the way that we want them to.  God is a God who can draw close to the brokenhearted. He can draw close to those who are living with shattered dreams and be a sufficiency for them. And a joy even for them. A purpose and a meaning for them…in Him."

"God is a God who can draw close to the brokenhearted. He can draw close to those who are living with shattered dreams and be a sufficiency for them."

Pastor Jamie continues, "For a 12-year-old, that is tapping into this response of God in the midst of our brokenness and pain, that’s not only highly unusual, it’s probably a miraculous thing, meaning that the Spirit of God had to enter into that, because I don’t know many 40-year-olds that can embrace that message very well."

Today is the 10th anniversary of Jared running ahead to heaven. Please keep the Frame family in your prayers. God isn't done using Jared’s life and witness to achieve His greater purposes. The Frames have changed my life and the life of my family, and l look forward to the completion of this film to share their story with everyone.
